The 20’s Plenty campaign aims to make the roads safer for cyclists and pedestrians by lobbying local authorities to reduce the speed limit to 20mph on residential and urban streets.
More and more towns across the UK are adopting the policy and reaping the rewards. Shouldn’t Sandbach be one of them?
- British parents consistently cite traffic speed as the main reason why their children are not allowed to cycle or walk to school
- 80% of the public and 75% of drivers support 20 mph as a speed limit on residential streets
- 20 mph limits have been shown to reduce child pedestrian accidents by 70%.
And the good news for car drivers is that new legislation means that traffic calming measures, such as speed ramps and chicanes, are no longer required on 20 mph streets. Because of this, and because the 20 limit would not apply to arterial routes, journey times for cars would not be significantly increased.
